Molecular Genetics Laboratory


In our research of gene-environment interplay, we aim to integrate different levels of analyses, including environmental factors, behavioral and physiological measures, down to the examination of processes on the level of the cell. On a molecular level, our goal is to characterize the flow of biological information, which includes the investigation of genetic variation, epigenetic processes, as well as RNA and protein expression levels.

Using state of the art platforms such as a PyroMark Q24 Advanced (Qiagen) and a CFX384 real time machine (BioRad) we are able to genotype for (epi-) genetic variations and to accurately quantify nucleic acids such as DNA and RNAs (including miRNAs). Our Chemidoc MP imager (BioRad) allows for high quality visualization of DNA, RNA, and proteins at highest flexibility and sensitivity. We also run a Synergy2 Multi-Mode Reader which is used for the assessment of a variety of hormones and quantification of DNA and RNA.

For Students


On a regular basis, we offer molecular genetic lab courses for Masters level students (click here). Students gain first insights into scientific lab work and gain hands-on experience. By analyzing their own blood samples they learn different techniques how to genotype for DNA variation and to quantify for RNA and protein expression patterns. The number of participants is limited to 6 students/lab course.
